Level Design Overview

Level Design, the most basic aspect of Unreal editing.  Level Design relates to the physical creation of your level, but is linked to all other aspects as well.  With UnrealED you must learn how to edit in three dimensions and learn the idea of addition and subtraction (of brushes, not 2+2, silly)...  Here are the tutorials we have available for all you level editors out there.

Level Design for Beginners

So you aren't very learned in your UnrealED skills yet?  You should go through all of the beginners tutorials so you can learn the editor, and all of them are linked to level design in some way, but here are the tutorials that are strictly level design related.

The 3D Concept - Read this tutorial If you have never edited in 3D before, you feel intimidated by all the windows and options, or if you are moving from 2D editing--like moving from BUILD to DukeED.

The Basics of UnrealED - This is where the editing begins.  Key concepts of UnrealED are covered in this tutorial, it is a must read if you want to know how to use UnrealED.

Making your First Level - After you have learned the basics, this tutorial will tell about how to construct a basic working level that you can play.

Zone Basics - Zoning in UnrealED is an important thing.  You need to learn about it to add things like water, lava, and a backdrop to your level.  A must read.

Advanced Level Design

Once you get that editor and the concept of level design in UnrealED down, try your hand at some of these advanced tutorials.  They can teach you to do specific things, and many of them are very essential to making cool levels!

Making Complex Brushes - You want to build things with more than simple cubes and cylinders? Read all about how to make much more complex building tools.  A must for advanced editors.

Using the 2D Shape Editor - Learn how to use the 2D Shape Editor, a cool tool that basically lets you draw shapes freehand, but in 2D.  It is good for making custom brushes.

Using the Floor Lofter - The Floor Lofter is a terrain tool that can have some pretty cool uses.  Read about how to use this tool.

Triggers - Triggers are an important tool in level design.   Triggers make stuff happen, and you need to know how to use them to do things like dynamic music, doors, elevators, or any other event based thing.

Movers - Movers are any brush that is able to move.   Learn about how to add moving brushes to your level - Includes doors, lifts, ambient moving decorations, etc.

Advanced Terrain I - Colin's zany tricks to create natural, realistic terrain via tricks with the floor lofter.

Ongoing Tutorials

Here are a couple of tutorials I am starting with the intent to add user input into them.  These two tutorials should include questions that are commonly asked, and problems that people commonly come upon in their UnrealED experiances.  Check them from time to time as they will be updated.

UnrealED DOs and DON'Ts - Hints and suggestions about things that can help you a lot, and things you should avoid doing (it's a buggy editor!)

Level Design Q&A - Having problems finding out how to do something in UnrealED?  Check out the tutorial before doing anything else trying to figure it out.  Users can send in questions to add to this compilation and it will be updated accordingly.

More Tutorials to come

Some tutorials not yet completed include the following - they will be online soon!

Complex Movers - A more detailed look into how to make more complex and awesome effects with movers

Making your level Distributeable - How to create something you can share with others
