UnrealED vs. DukeED

Since this is a Duke Nukem Forever editing site, UnrealED is taught now.  If you know how to edit in UnrealED, DukeED, for the most part, will be a breeze to learn.  However, there will be some differences.  This page is where I will keep an up to date account of what is known about the differences between the two.  Check back as we get more information about DukeED.

UnrealED vs. DukeED - Similarities

Similarities between the two:  DukeED is simply a modified version of UnrealED.   Most things should remain the same.  Look for 3DR maybe to change it somewhat appearance wise, (and maybe not), but most things will remain the same.  Look for level construction to basically be the same (addition/subtraction of brushes), etc.   Most things should be similar, and that is pretty much what 3D Realms is saying on the subject to this day.

UnrealED vs. DukeED - Differences

Possible Differences:  DukeED should be similar, but it should have some cool things added to it.  A tool to make editing brushes easier has been suggested (possibly a clip tool? I don't really know).  The graphics engine will no doubt be enhanced a lot, so that will be improved upon.  The whole scripting system is probably what will be most changed.  3D Realms might totally redo it, or add things to it.  Things like skeletal systems for characters, their own level of detail system, motion capture, and other enhancements to the engine that are most likely scripting/classes related to make the game more interactive.

Music is another thing to possibly change, however it is unknown for sure, so see below...

UnrealED vs. DukeED - The Unknown

The Unknown:  There are many things unknown for sure about DukeED at this point.   What exactally they will do to the scripting/classes system is unknown at this point.  What they will do to the music support is also a question mark.  3D Realms has suggested using mp3s, cd music, or a new format.  Recently, George Brossard said that they might use a streaming wave file type of music.  I still can't confirm this as 100%, however, that might change the music aspect of DukeED.

Fortunately, as far as I have heard, 3D Realms is keeping in Unreal's MOD music support in addition to whatever route they choose for DNF's music.  This is great because MOD music is a wonderful format which I highly praise :)

But like I said, most things are unknown at this point.   Check back later and this page will be updated as more is known.

UnrealED vs. DukeED - Conclusion

Conclusion: We can't really draw any conclusions just yet, it is too premature.  As more information is known, I will post it.  As far as I know right now, DukeED should be very similar in most aspects to UnrealED, especially in the level construction area.   So, go ahead and learn UnrealED now, it will benefit you for a long time, for the many games that use the Unreal engine to come.
