Ok, so my system meets the
requirements. Now what?
Installing UnrealED
UnrealED comes included with the full version of Unreal. When you are installing the game,
make sure you check the box to install the editor..
Unreal Installation Screen - Select
UnrealED
If you are sure to install it, UnrealED can now
be run from the Unreal directory in your start menu.
Getting UnrealED to work
Unreal has had many problem solving and feature
enhancing patches. The latest patch, 225, breaks backwards compatibility.
(Meaning anything you do in UnrealScript and maybe other things won't work for people
using Unreal 220 or an older version).. The patch speeds up load times and increases
some compatibility issues, especially things like UnrealScript windows crashing UnrealED.
The game and the editor are still nowhere near perfect, but you certainly want to
download the patch before using Unreal or UnrealED anyway. You want the patch.
The Patch: Once
the game and the editor are installed, you should patch Unreal to the latest version (as
of this writing, version 225 is the latest). Go to the Unreal patch
download page and get the patch.
Epic has released some experimental fixes in May/June to help people with UnrealED
problems... They released four experimental fixes, the first two helped some people,
so they made another version. Experimental Fix 3 is the last in that series, and is
supposed to fix runtime errors (possibly eliminating the need to download the VB5
runtimes). I reccomend that everyone first try Eperimental Fix 3 and the RichText
update (below) - Then, if problems still persist, try the VB5 runtime drivers. UnrealED
Experimental Fix 3 (3,083KB)
What about the fourth
experimental fix? Epic released a fourth fix for UnrealED after that... This
fix is for people who have the full version of Unreal that came with Voodoo3 cards.
This version for whatever reason, did not come with UnrealED. Since you legally own
a copy of Unreal, Epic has provided this fix for you. Download and install it and
you should have a working copy of UnrealED. Standalone
UnrealED Installer (Fix 4) (3,393KB) - For people who have the Voodoo3 full version of
Unreal.
UnrealED also requires the
Visual Basic 5 runtime drivers (see above for possible workaround). If you get a runtime
error when starting UnrealED, and you have already tried Experimental Fix 3 and you have
the latest patch, you need to install them. Download the VB5
runtimes here (1901KB).
The UnrealScript viewer requires the richtext update. Download it
here (192KB) and extract it to your /windows/system/ directory.
One more thing, if you have
tried all of these fixes, but UnrealED will still not work, it might be a sound problem.
Some people (From what I've heard, people with A3D 2.0 cards like the MX300) have
to disable sound to get UnrealED to work. Do this one of two ways:
1.) Run
the game, then in Advanced Options, open Advanced --> Game Engine Settings -->
UseSound... Change that value to False
2.) The
other way is to open your Unreal.ini file (Located in Your Unreal
Directory\System\Unreal.ini). The value is under [Engine.GameEngine] - Change the
UseSound=True line to, you guessed it, UseSound=False.
Disabling sound might be your
only option to get UnrealED to work, however I hope this is not the case, and I hope they
fix this, because sound is a big part of editing if you ask me. You could still add
sounds of course, but you won't be able to listen to them before adding them.
Once you get all of this resolved, you are ready.
UnrealED should now be installed, patched, and opened successfully.
On a side note, I hope 3D Realms has these problems resolved
when they release DukeED with DNF. I'm willing to bet they will.
This tutorial is now complete! Now
to get acquainted with the editor... |
