Before you go
any further (at least if you haven't purchased Unreal yet) - Know that the system
requirements are that of a next generation game. So if you are still running BUILD on a
Pentium or 486, it is time to upgrade.
The first requirement to start editing is that you own a copy of Unreal. If you haven't
played or heard about this game, you can visit the official site for more information. As for those of us who
haven't been under a rock for the past two years, I'm sure you have a
copy at hand.
Unreal itself "requires" a P166mhz and 16MB of RAM. While thats what it says on
the box, reality proves that you really need a P200MMX at least, or a Pentium II if you
really want to enjoy the game. When I played Unreal with 32MB of RAM, the game would
always crash between levels, I'm guessing it ran out of memory. So I have no idea how they
thought the game could possibly run on 16MB. I reccomend at least 64MB, 128MB to eliminate
all swapping. You will definately want to play with a 3D Card such as a voodoo2/3 or a
NVidia Riva TNT/TNT2 card. Thats what you need for the game, the editor is a bit
different..
When I had a Pentium 120, the editor-while taking eons to load-ran acceptably. The 3D View
window didn't bog down too much and all-in-all I was able to edit. However, the compiles
were tedious, and the game itself ran like crap. So there is no point to even try if you
have less than a P200MMX. Just as the game would crash between levels with 32MB of RAM,
the editor crashes when it runs out of memory while loading large maps or huge texture
sets. 64MB is what I say is required to run the game and the editor. As far as hard drive
space goes, an old 1.6GB will be useless to you because you need at least a good 500MB
free to install Unreal. 400MB for the game and all of its content, and a good amount of
swap space for it to run on. In addition to a good 3D Card to play the game on, you will
need atleast a 4MB PCI video card. UnrealED should be run in 1024x768 or higher at a
minimum of 16-bit color, but preferrably in 32 bit. A nice AGP card would be optimal, and
you can get many great 16MB AGP cards for less than $100 today. RAM is cheap as well now,
as of this writing, 128MB PC100 DIMMs were less than $90. If you don't meet these
requirements, its time to upgrade anyway:
P200MMX CPU (Pentium II 266+ reccomended)
64MB RAM (128MB reccomended)
4MB PCI Video (8MB AGP reccomended)
A Fast 3D Accelerator (3DFX Voodoo or Riva TNT reccomended)
500MB of available hard drive space
You need this setup to play any new game anyway, as well as Duke Nukem Forever when it
comes out. Don't want to be repetative, just that some Duke3D players might not have
upgraded in a while.
So, if you have met these requirements and are ready to get started, proceed to the next
section, Installation. It's not your regular installtion, many patches
and upgrades are required to get it working.. |
