DukeEd.com Restoration Project

Greetings everyone, after a couple of weeks in a
WYSIWYG editor, I have tried to restore this website to it's former glory.
This website may serve as a full backup of the DukeEd.com website that
existed between 1998-2001. At the moment, the
website is 90% restored. The only stuff that hasn't been restored well
in this website are the images, few tutorial pages, some files from the
Downloads page, and the search page is broken too. At the moment, the
website is in version 1.0 and we are planning to add more content in it
as time passes by, including an overhaul of the tutorials page that
pertain to the DukeEd that comes with DNF2001, Downloads pages will have
new maps and mods. I would also like to mention the newer, and last
pages of DukeEd. The owner of DukeEd.com, 3D Portal was actually sold to GameSpy. You can check the page
here.
If you have any suggestions on what should be
added or fixed in this website, you can check out the
DNFRP Discord where you can give a suggestion there.

UT.edu Senior Class

*clears out the
cobwebs* Whoa! The site's still here! I do apologize to everyone who
actually checks the site from time to time, but, well, with all the slow
info on DukeEd coming, there hasn't been much emphasis put into this
site. But I did want to slap up the last part to that UT.edu tutorial
from last month *sad look* that I never posted. Just in case you didn't
check UTWorld, here
it is:
DailyRadar posted
the last part to their tutorial on UnrealEd usage, with this section
focusing on
Assault maps (which, incidentally, are my favorite type). Go read up
on the
Senior Class at DailyRadar!
I really would
like to put up some more tutorials, I got some correspondence from
Spyder about doing a short tutorial on converting HalfLife prefabs to UT
(which could then go into DukeEd if you so desired) so that's good as
well. Keep checking back, and I'll keep the waffle iron warm for you!!

UT.edu: Freshman - Junior Class
[ Category: Duke Nukem Forever |
Subcategory: Editing ]

Man, I almost
forgot to mention this, and what the heck, the news has been pretty slow
on the DukeEd front *grin*
DailyRadar has a
four-part section up about UnrealEd usage and editing, which relates to
DukeEd stuff (in a roundabout way) so if you're looking for some
entry-level -> intermediate Unreal editing tips, check out
- the
Freshman Class for an introduction to brushes and the UEd
interface, then roll on to the
-
Sophomore Class, where you'll select and texture brushes in
wacky ways, and then on to the
-
Junior Class, where you can figure out fog, skyboxes, water,
colored lighting, and other meaty dishes.
The next few days
should bring the Senior Class, where presumably you'll learn how to cut
corners in the editor and work as little as possible while contemplating
life AFTER UnrealEd (meaning: DukeEd!!) So be prepared for that one..
And as always, check out this site's masterful
Tutorials section,
which is lovingly handcrafted by my homays Nuke and Cerebris. Enjoy!

New 3DRealms website
[ Category: 3D Realms | Subcategory: All ]
Posted by LeftE at 4:59 PM CST
The new 3DRealms
website has been launched! Check it out at
http://208.46.214.89/
(the DNS will catch up in a few days). They have a bunch of new stuff on
the site, including a new host, Qwest. Check out the specs (for you
netgeeks out there):
The 3D Realms
Web Server is co-located at Qwest. The box is a Sun Enterprise 250
running Solaris 2.6. It's a 400Mhz UltraSparc II Processor with 1
Gigabyte of RAM. The drive is a 36Gig RAID drive. Our connection is
a burstable (up to) 10Meg a second on a T3.
The new site also
features lots of changes, the most visible being: No frames! They also
added .plan updates, an internal banner system, improved polling and
discussion boards, and lots of other innovations culled from the online
gaming news industry :)

Waffle Map is a
level I have been working on (and off and on) for quite a (long) while.
Check out 9 kick ass shots
I have posted here from the map to see what I have been doing in
UnrealED while not busting out with tutorials :)
I started a
discussion here too if you want to comment on the shots. If not, thats
cool as well.

Could a new version of UnrealED be coming?
[ Category: All | Subcategory: All ]
Posted by NukeDukem at 3:52
AM CST
Perhaps a little
background on this first: When Unreal was in development, it was said by
Epic that there would be a beta of UnrealED released with the game
(Unreal) when it was released. A few months after that, they said a
commercial version of UnrealED would be released (along with a bountiful
collection of texture sets and other new goodies for us to work with).
Of course, after Unreal was released, Epic spent all of their time
patching Unreal due to 3D card and netplay issues - and moved on to
getting Unreal Tournament finished after that. Releasing a full version
of UnrealED or a C++ (UnrealED as it is now is written in Visual Basic)
and bug free version of it for free or commercially was basically put
off. Now it looks like we might be in luck. Tim Sweeney had this to say
in response to Unreal
Tournament de's questioning on the subject:
We're working
with a third party who is getting the new UnrealEd up and running
under C++ (most of the problems people are having are due to the
UnrealEd user interface being written in Visual Basic). We'll have
news on this soon.
From what I hear, this means a 3rd party may actually be working on
releasing a full working C++ version of UnrealED commercially. What does
this mean for DukeED? From what I know, DukeED right now is basically
the same as the UnrealED that you get with patched Unreal or Unreal
Tournament. Since this new version is supposed to be commercially sold,
I have doubts about whether or not we will see these improvements
implemented into DukeED, but you never know. Let us hope that 3D Realms
does every thing they can to provide the most functional and user
friendly tool for us like they did with BUILD :)
Tim said there
will be more news on this soon though, so I may be jumping the gun. We
shall see.

One More Question For Ya...
[ Category: All | Subcategory: All ]
Posted by NukeDukem at 7:41
PM CST
There were some
good suggestions in the previous discussion I started. Now as we are
working on plans for this site's future I have another question. The
question is: Would you prefer all Unreal Tournament tutorials over
Unreal 1? Would it be ok if we focused on Unreal Tournament only now?
Basically it comes down to which game you have, Unreal 1 or Unreal
Tournament. If you only have Unreal and don't yet have Unreal
Tournament, tell us so. It is our belief that Unreal Tournament would be
the overwhelming choice of everyone now, but I may as well ask the
people what they think first :)

As I said in the
previous post, changes are coming to this site. What would you like to
see? This is what I would like to know - Take some time and join the
discussion I have started. What tutorials would you like to see? More
Unreal Tournament oriented things? What features would you like to see
on this site? Things like music, custom texture sets, user files, etc.
If you want to see it on this site, tell us in the discussion.

News Update on Site Goings-On
[ Category: All | Subcategory: All ]
Posted by NukeDukem at 6:33
PM CST
It has been a
while, but I am here with an update on things at DukeED.com :) First off
I would like to apologize for the lack of updates. Very shortly we will
have tutorial updates on a regular basis.
The first issue I
would like to address is the scripting tutorials section. Our scripting
expert Jeremy Easoz had planned on doing weekly UnrealScript tutorials.
This didn't work out at the time because he had other things going on in
his life and never did a second installment. We apologize for that. He
is now onboard with us again and is starting a new series of tutorials.
This series will be different than the last one, as it will take you
step by step through the process of creating a working modification to
the game (Unreal/Unreal Tournament). I have taken down the old tutorial
(First one of his old series) for now, and I expect the new series to be
up in a short time.
The next issue is
Unreal Tournament. Many of you now have Unreal Tournament and would
rather edit for it than for Unreal 1. Due to this fact, this site will
soon offer Unreal and Unreal Tournament versions of all tutorials. Most
things should remain the same, but it will be nice to have the tutorials
make sense if you are trying to get Unreal Tournament to work.
Also coming in
the future (maybe not the next week or two, but coming) are site
improvements. Many people have mentioned that the tutorials need to be
more organized and such, plus with the addition of Unreal Tournament
(and DNF in the future), this will become an increasing concern. Look
for an improved layout plus some other good stuff to come.
Other tutorials
are coming as well, expect them soon, as well as Unreal Tournament
versions of existing ones. Stay tuned, and more on this in the next news
item.

Dukeworld and 3D Portal launch DukeED.com
[ Category: All | Subcategory: All ]
Posted by NukeDukem at 12:17
AM CST
We here at 3D
Portal are proud to bring to you DukeED.com, a site focused on editing
for Duke Nukem Forever. DNF's editor as you may know will be called
DukeED, and will be an incarnation of UnrealED. We have created this
site in advance of DNF's release due to how similar editing for DNF
should be to editing for Unreal. You can arm yourself for DNF editing
today by learing how to use UnrealED with the tutorials at this site.
We have many
tutorials online already, especially beginners tutorials, which should
be easy enough for anyone who really wants to learn how to use UnrealED
to be able to figure out with no problem.
Take a look
around, and prepare yourself so you will be ready to edit the greatest
game of all time, Duke Nukem Forever, when it is released!
